History Exam (English Colonies in America)

All of these answers are from the same student.

Short answer

(Write your answers in complete sentences.)

5. When did the Pilgrims arrive in Massachusetts?

The Pilgrims arrived in Mass. after they crossed the Atlantic Ocean, and got off their ship Mayflower. Once all were ashore, they all arrived.

8. What was the Mayflower Compact?

The Mayflower Compact was a deal the Pilgrims made with each other to work together and not run off and they wuld [sic] be English and not just people living in the woods with no goverment [sic].

11. How did the local people react to the arrival of the English colonists?

Mostly the local people died. Some didn’t, though, and they shot at the English because the other English captured or killed their people before. And some didn’t shoot at them but wanted to know who they were.

I counted all questions as correct. I need to learn how to write better questions.

Both riotous and erudite. I can just imagine you trying to wrap your brain around the logic of where the answers came from. Being able to pose good questions is an art and science in itself.

Here's an idea: why not have each member of your highly intelligent class submit five questions for your next test? Then distribute all the questions and discuss which questions are the best and why. Then assemble your test using those questions (with a few rim shots of your own tossed in). By discussing the questions ahead of time they will know that they won't be able to pull fancy-pants end runs out of their pockets. Might as well take advantage of the fact that they ARE so smart. :)

Technically they are correct. However, you should make sure you are teaching history and not logic.

Which is testimony to what a good teacher you are; one that can still learn from her own mistakes!

How I've hated my son's teacher this past year. Oh. I wanted to take out my ten year old and get him drunk on the last day of school, the whole year was THAT bad. Of course I did not! But we did rock out to the Ramones all the way home, with the windows down in the pouring rain.

Ahhhh. Remind me to send you the video we made when we got home. It's ridiculous.
